Today, we continued our study of the tenth vision of Zechariah, found in Zechariah chapter 8.
In this class, we concluded our look at the character qualities that Yahweh is looking to produce in Zion/Israel (the saved people of Yahweh). These are the character qualities of all that will be saved, and are listed in Zechariah 8:16-17.
Zechariah 8:16-17 “These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith Yahweh.”
· After this look at the character qualities Yahweh is looking for in His people, we continued with looking at Zechariah 8's reference to some annual days of fasting, which are not listed in Leviticus 23, among the Feasts of Yahweh.
What are the Fasts of Zechariah 8:19
·
Zechariah 8:19 “The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast
of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth …”
o The fast of the fourth month – In Babylonian captivity, the fourth month came to be called Tammuz
- 2 Kings 25:3-4 – the fall and captivity of Judah happened on the 9th
day of the fourth month
- Jeremiah 39:2 – Jerusalem fell to Babylon on the 9th day of
the fourth month
- Jeremiah 52:6-7 – the fall and captivity of Judah/Jerusalem on the 9th
day of the fourth month
o
The fast of the fifth month – Solomon’s
Temple was destroyed on the 10th of the fifth month
- Zechariah 7:3 – Zechariah kept this fast “for so many years”
- Jeremiah 52:12-15 – the Temple of Solomon was burned/destroyed on the
10th of the fifth month
o
The fast of the seventh month is the Day of Atonement – Leviticus 23:26-32
- This is the 10th day of the 7th Month and we are
commanded to “afflict our souls” from evening to evening (24 hours) =
afflicting the soul is equated with “fasting” in Scripture.
- THIS IS THE ONLY FAST in Zechariah 8, that is commanded by Yahweh.
·
Romans 14 – This chapter is about
fasting to whatever degree on days that “man” has “esteemed”… “unto Yahweh”. But a man cannot unesteem day
that Yahweh has esteemed.
o
Letting everyone be convicted in their
own mind applies to whether or not to keep man-esteemed days… and also how to keep it (whether to eat
“herbs”, or eat, or fast… do not judge one another)
o
Purim – was the day that Mordechai set
apart to keep, yearly, in commemoration of the defeat of Haman and the threat
of Israel’s destruction.
- Mordechai instituted Purim – as an example of man esteeming a day. It
was “unto Yahweh” because the purpose was praise to Yahweh and to make sure the
people of Yah never forgot how He miraculously delivered! – Esther 9:21-22
o
Esther – called Israel to fast and
pray with her 3 days and nights (man esteemed days unto Yahweh) in preparation
for going before the king – Esther 4:16
