Today we finished our study of Zechariah's second vision. This one, found in Zechariah 1:18-21, talks about four horns and four carpenters. We finished our study of the four horns - identifying them as the same four horns which appear in Daniel 8 on the he-goat power.
We also studied what it means that the horns "scatter" the holy people...
The carpenters in this vision are Yahweh’s workmen. In Hebrew, “wisdom” is directly connected with skillful artisans – those who can glorify Yahweh in creating like the Sanctuary furniture and cloths. Skilled carpenters are a symbol, linguistically connected, of the saved people of Yahweh, who possess wisdom and do His Work. In the end, after the time when the horns are allowed to persecute and scatter the power of Yahweh’s holy people, Yahweh will raise up in His people a mighty resistance.
In the end, Yahweh’s people will “fray” (cause to tremble with fear) and “cast out” the wicked horns of the Gentiles (pagans). The carpenters’ work is represented as being carried out by 4 carpenters. Like the four horns, this is a reference to a global work. Yahweh’s people will do this work globally, arising in His Spirit from the North, South, East, and West.
