Prophecy Class - Day 39: Minor Prophets: Habakkuk 3

Today we continued our study of Minor Prophets - specifically, we are studying Habakkuk - Chapter 3.

Today, we continued our study of Habakkuk chapter 3.

Habakkuk 3:3-4God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His Glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of His praise. And His Brightness was as the Light; He had Horns coming out of His Hand: and there was the hiding of His Power.”

·  Remember the Alamo!” – A battle cry in the Texas struggle for independence from Mexico…  The Texan defenders in the fort Alamo fought to the death (Davy Crocket died there).

·  For these terms to be understood, one needs to know the historical context. That’s how it is for the Habakkuk reference to Teman and Paran.

Amos 1:12 “But I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah.”

The first part of Moses’ final blessing over Israel – Deuteronomy 33:2-4:
“And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them. Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words. Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.”

·  God came from Teman – Teman is a reference to Edom’s strength as an oppressor, and Yahweh’s Judgment of it…

o   Edom is the name given to Esau after the pottage incident.

o   Esau vs Jacob…  Esau is left out of the birthright blessing. Jacob receives the birthright blessing…  resulting in Salvation (Jacob’s sons are the heads of the 12 tribes of Israel, whose names are on the Gates of the New Jerusalem…  They sit on 12 of the thrones of the 24 elders…)

o   Edom represents everyone who will be shut out of Heaven, as it was with Esau, aka Edom, it will be their choice (they will choose the flesh over the eternal).

o   Jacob represents everyone who is saved.

o   Edom vs Jacob is not a national thing… its everyone…

o   Teman is the oppressive strength of the shut out ones – who persecute Jacob. Yahweh Judges Teman. This is so epic of a prophecy that it was a proverb for Habakkuk.

o   God came from Teman means that Yahweh will judge the oppressors – the wicked – the lost. It’s a message of deliverance for the saved.

the Holy One from mount Paran

Deuteronomy 33:2-4 “And he said, Yahweh came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; He shined forth from mount Paran, and He came with ten thousands of saints: from His right Hand went a fiery Law for them. Yea, He loved the people; all His saints are in Thy Hand: and they sat down at Thy Feet; every one shall receive of Thy Words. Moses commanded us a Law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.”

·  Teman is on the side of the wicked (the Esau – all the lost)…  Paran is emblematic of being the Place people gather to hear the Torah – And worship Yahweh as the Law-giver. Paran is a Place of Blessing – and Teman is a place of Judgment.

  • Habakkuk 3 Verses 3b and 4 describe Yahshua’s visible display of glory during this campaign, "His splendor has covered the skies, the earth is full of his glory. 4 His brightness will be as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashing from his hand. This is the outward display of his power". This open display of his glory places the timing of this campaign after Yahshua’s glorious appearance at the seventh and last trumpet (Revelation 11:15).
  • Revelation 11:15 “And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
  • Revelation 18:1 “And after these things, I saw another angel come down from Heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.”
  • Torah is the Light – connecting the reference to the glory of Yahweh with Paran – the iconic name of the Place where the Law was given.

Habakkuk 3:5-6Before Him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at His Feet. He stood, and measured (judgment) the earth: He beheld, and drove asunder the nations (the Daniel 2 image is broken by the Stone Kingdom); and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: His Ways are Everlasting.”

·  Revelation 16:19-20 “And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.”

·  Habakkuk 3:5 says “plague goes before Him…  Plagues corresponds with the seven bowl Judgments (Revelation 16) that are released just prior to the 2nd Coming.

·  Habakkuk 3:6 describes the earthquake that occurs at the fall of Babylon.

Habakkuk 3:7-8 “I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction: and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble. Was Yahweh displeased against the rivers? Was Thine Anger against the rivers? Was Thy Wrath against the sea, that Thou didst ride upon Thine Horses and Thy Chariots of Salvation?”

·  Isaiah 21 connects Cushan with Babylon. This corresponds to the judgments being released upon Mystery Babylon – Revelation 16:19-21

·  Habakkuk 3:8 shows Yahshua making war with the rivers and seas…  In prophecy water and seas represent nations. Literally, the plagues involve the waters being turned to blood and the fish-sea creatures dying…  Figuratively, Yah is making war with the unsaved (the wicked).

Habakkuk 3:9-10 “Thy Bow was made quite naked, according to the oaths of the tribes, even Thy Word. Selah. Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers. The mountains saw Thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.”

·  Verse 9 says, "Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth’s surface". The bow metaphorically portrays Yahshua as armed and ready for war. As He commissions (shoots) his arrows, plagues and judgments are released.

·  In verse 10, earthquake and storms are more of His arrows. The great deep is translated from a word meaning “abyss” which symbolizes the forces of darkness around the world that oppose God (Genesis 1:2) and the nations of the world that stand against Him (Revelation 17:15). It shouts out and lifts its hands high, implying its surrender and plea for mercy. The power of Yahshua‘s arrows is more than the nations can stand.

Habakkuk 3:11-12 “The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of Thine Arrows they went, and at the shining of Thy glittering Spear. Thou didst march through the land in indignation, Thou didst thresh the heathen in Anger.”

Habakkuk 3:13-14 “Thou wentest forth for the Salvation of Thy people, even for Salvation with Thine anointed; Thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah. Thou didst strike through with his staves the head of his villages: they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me: their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly.”

·  Verses 13b describes Yahshua’s' defeat of the Antichrist, "You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah" (NET), or translated in the KJV as "thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck. Selah". In gory detail, Yahshua slits him open from groin to neck.

Habakkuk 3:15-16 “Thou didst walk through the sea with Thine Horses, through the heap of great waters. When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the Voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the Day of Trouble: when He cometh up unto the people, He will invade them with His troops.”

The worksheet is not posted, as we will complete all of the studies of Habakkuk on this worksheet set, and then I will post the completed worksheet. There are three chapters of Habakkuk.
